       Zero-level waveplates are made of two quartz waveplates combined. The amount of phase delay of the waveplate is the result of the two quartz waveplates together. The thickness of the two waveplates is designed so that the achromatic waveplate produces a phase delay of π/2 or π (i.e., one-fourth or one-half). One-half waveplates are often used to rotate the direction of polarization of linearly polarized light, while quarter waveplates are often used to convert linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light.
