Multi-stage waveplates are made of a single quartz crystal with a thicker thickness and a phase delay of π/2 or π (i.e., one-quarter or one-half wave). "Multi-stage" refers to the fact that, in addition to realizing the designed one-quarter or one-half wavelength delay, the light path is delayed by a number of full-wavelengths (also known as stages, or m's). Multi-stage waveplates are more sensitive to wavelength and temperature changes than zero-stage waveplates. However, multistage waveplates are less expensive and can be used in applications that are not significantly affected by temperature and wavelength.
